One of the most well-known pests to South Florida is the American cockroach. Alternatively known as the palmetto bug, American cockroaches have survived over millions of years on planet Earth, thriving in warm, humid weather. This species is highly resilient and adapts behavioral patterns to survive. So, if a cockroach prefers to live in a warmer environment, why do cockroaches stick around during the winter?
Although this species is common throughout the world, the American cockroach seems especially familiar to Florida year-round. Unlike most of the United States, Florida’s climate remains relatively warm during the winter season. Average winter temperatures in Florida range from about 70 °F (in Key West) to about 50 °F (in Tallahassee). Southern Florida is geographically closer to the equator, allowing higher temperatures and humidity to linger during winter months. That being said, South Florida is naturally a safe haven for pests that need a moderately hot and damp climate to survive.
Most species of cockroaches, more specifically the American cockroach, usually cannot survive in temperatures dropping lower than 25 °F. These insects are cold-blooded and can only sustain life for one week without water, a scarce resource during winter. In addition to a low water supply, the winter months bring about a slower reproduction rate for cockroaches. To escape the cold environment, cockroaches will migrate to warmer climates, indoor areas, or sewage. South Florida homes provide the perfect resting place for cockroaches that need shelter when weather temperatures drop.
Just because cockroaches may seek out warmth and safety inside your South Florida home, does not mean you cannot protect your property from an infestation. To uncover any cockroaches, check the moist areas of your home, like under sinks, behind dishwashers, under refrigerators, in trash cans, and inside crawlspaces. Make sure doorways are secure by sealing any gaps under doors and by using door and window screens. Also, confirm there are no unnecessary gaps around anything that goes through an external wall, like pipes or cables.
