It is known that mosquitoes can be one of the most dangerous pests to date. They are disease transmitters and are responsible for hundreds of malaria cases each year; however, they can also carry many other types of diseases and infections. We tend to underestimate the danger these pests bring about because of their size, but it surely is safer to try and keep them as far away as possible.
Here are some tips from Manning Pest Control on how to protect from and avoid mosquito bites.
Use mosquito repellent
The most effective chemical repellents contain DEET, picaridin, PMD or IR3535 insecticide. These are all considered safe when used as directed by the product developer. Mosquito repellent has been studied to work best against mosquitoes whenapplied thoroughly to the skin. If using sunscreen during the day, apply mosquito repellent after the sunscreen. Reapply every 3 to 4 hours for best results.
Wear light-colored clothing
Dark colors, such as black and blue, tend to attract mosquitoes. Keep pests away by wearing light-colored clothing that reaches the entire length of the arms and legs.
Stay indoors during dusk and dawn
One can avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes by staying indoors, especially during peak mosquito feeding times. Although mosquitoes can bite at any time of the day, there is a higher chance of getting bit at dusk or dawn.
Make yourself less appealing
Naturally, some individuals are more appealing to mosquitoes than others. Body odor differs from person to person. According to previous studies, individuals with type O blood are preferred by mosquitoes. In this case, wearing a scent that mosquitoes dislike, such as DEET repellent, will help drive them away.
Try citronella candles
Commercial citronella candles do not seem to do the trick when keeping mosquitoes away. According to DIY Network, making homemade citronella candles using pure essential oils can be a fun craft and may be more effective than any repellent candles at your local retail store.
Remember: if you do get bit by a mosquito, do not scratch it! Scratching the affected area will only worsen the bite and make it itch much more. Treat yourself with a non-itching cream when the urge to scratch arises.
