Once the summer season rolls around, family travel plans finally come to fruition. If your trip involves hitting up an area populated with bugs, especially mosquitoes, you should be prepared with the right tools to protect you and your family. Manning Brothers Pest Control suggests these tips to keep in mind while traveling to keep mosquitoes away.
Research your destination
Before traveling to a new area, research whether or not mosquitoes are native pests. In addition to learning if mosquitoes are common to your travel destination, understand that different types of mosquitoes can be particularly dangerous, like Aedes mosquitoes, Anopholese mosquitoes and Culex mosquitoes.
Use insect repellent
Although some people attract mosquitoes more than others, it’s still important to protect yourself from these disease-carrying bugs. Created by the U.S. Army over 60 years ago, DEET is still one of the most effective mosquito repellents on the market. According to WebMD, the best bug repellent is “OFF! Deep Woods,” which contains about 24% DEET and protects for an average of 5 hours.
Cover up your body
Along with mosquito repellent, make sure to wear long sleeve shirts and long, baggy pants to help protect from pests. Mosquitoes can easily bite through spandex, so ideally your clothing material should be thick. If the area you’re traveling to is extremely infested, experts suggest wearing clothes pre-treated with permethrin, a synthetic insecticide.
Stay indoors during dusk and dawn
If a curfew doesn’t interrupt your trip, try remaining indoors during peak mosquito times: dusk and dawn. During these times, mosquitoes are most active. Any outdoor activities planned should ideally be scheduled during the late-morning or mid-day.
