Living in the Sunshine State means warm weather will be present all year round, making for the perfect climate pests will never want to escape. Even when lower temperatures hit South Florida, pests experience something we call overwintering. This means that bugs look for warmer environments where they can hibernate until the weather warms up. On the upside, you will not see as many pests during colder days. Conversely, they will come out from their habitats when temperatures rise again.
What types of winter bugs should I be expecting in South Florida?
Bed bugs: We all like to travel during the holidays, but bringing these famous hitchhiking bugs back home should not be included in our plans. Bed bugs love to cling to cloth materials, including our clothes and luggage. To avoid these unwanted visitors, we recommend checking your hotel’s headboards, mattresses, and box springs for bed bug blood spots. We also recommend hanging all your clothes up in the closet. This will avoid leaving them at a lower level where bed bugs can crawl. Once you return home, we highly suggest vacuuming your suitcases and washing all your clothes with hot water before storing them.
Cockroaches: Cockroaches tend to be more present during this time of year. They like to hang around because of the conditions we create inside our home during these months. With holiday parties going on, excessive décor, and food platters exposed for extended periods of time, cockroaches are bound to be attracted to the holiday environment inside your home. They are not only disgusting, but they are dangerous to have around because they often carry diseases and harmful bacteria.
Silverfish: These tiny pests tend to invade during the winter. When temperatures become too cold for them, they look for warmer, moist places to nest. These areas may include bedroom closets, bathrooms, or main storage areas. Although silverfish are not known for carrying harmful bacteria, they often eat your photos, documents, and other types of paper to survive.
