This hurricane season, you may notice an influx of pests throughout your residential property. Florida is no stranger to pests who thrive during warmer months; however, the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season will definitely increase the number of pests you will encounter through November 30th.
Ants
Typically, ants come out to play during summer months because of the warm, humid weather. If a hurricane is projected to hit, ants will not survive if they are out in the open. They will inevitably take refuge in your home where there is shelter from heavy rain and severe wind gusts. Ants are small creatures. They can manage to crawl through endless cracks and crevices throughout your home. Some species of ants, like fire ants, can even pose a threat to those with sensitive allergies.
To avoid an infestation, check the perimeter of your home for any small holes where ant colonies can fit through. Miniscule cracks of entry can be found in old doorways and windows. Be sure to keep your kitchen spotless, as ants are likely to feed on crumbs. Promptly clean up after meals, throw out any open packages hidden in the back of the pantry, and keep garbage cans clean. Set up store-bought ant traps, baits, and gels all around the house’s bordering areas.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are known to thrive where climates are warm and wet. After a hurricane, mosquitoes will repopulate by laying eggs in standing pools of water. They will hang around these pools and moist debris until those eggs have hatched and swarms grow. Once a mosquito enters a house, they can fly around for many more hours than usual. Mosquitoes stay active longer inside the home because of controlled temperatures and lighting. Therefore, mosquitoes are more likely to hang around biting throughout the day.
Although some people attract mosquitoes more than others, it is still important to protect yourself from these disease-carrying bugs. DEET, the ingredient that provides protection against mosquitoes, is one of the most important components that makes mosquito repellents effective. Experts recommend purchasing mosquito repellent that contains more than 20% DEET.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are common to Florida, especially during hurricane season. Cockroaches are more likely to camp out in the moist areas of your home during a storm. These areas can be under sinks, behind dishwashers, under refrigerators, in trash cans, and inside crawlspaces.
To keep cockroaches out of your home, make sure entryways are secure, check for gaps under doors, use door and window screens when possible, and seal up any cracks that grant access to your home. Additionally, make sure there are no unnecessary gaps around anything that goes through an external wall, like pipes or cables.
